Agastya Lake

Named for the sage Agastya, this rectangular water tank was built up by the Early Chalukyas to serve their capital and remains the town’s defining landmark, flanked on one side by the cave temples cut into its northern cliff and on the other by structural temples including the Bhutanatha group. The lake’s steps and shrines reflect its role as both a civic reservoir and a sacred bathing tank, with Badami’s honey-coloured sandstone hills reflected across its surface at dawn and dusk. It anchors what is one of the most compact and walkable heritage clusters in North Karnataka. Agastya Lake sits at an elevation of 566 m and is typically explored in about 1 hour. The most favourable months to visit are December, January, November, and October, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Agastya Lake Boating Point, Sage Agastya Meditation Cave, and Lakshmi Narasimha Temple. Other notable highlights include boat ride past red sandstone cliffs and cave temples, sunset view of Bhutanatha temple reflections on water, and walk along stone embankment to ancient ghat steps. It falls within Bagalkot district, India.

Can we combine a visit to Agastya Lake with other attractions in the region?
