Ramanagara’s bare, boulder-strewn hills provided the rugged backdrop for the bandit hideouts of the 1975 Hindi film Sholay, whose fictional "Ramgarh" setting made the terrain famous nationwide, and the same weathered granite domes now attract rock climbers and bouldering enthusiasts from across the region. The town is also home to Asia’s largest silk cocoon market and, on Ramadevara Betta just outside it, one of the few nesting sites in India for the critically endangered long-billed vulture, protected as a dedicated vulture sanctuary since 2012. Ramanagara sits at an elevation of 690 m and is typically explored in about half day. The most favourable months to visit are January, December, November, and July, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Revana Siddeshwara Temple, Bheemeshwari Fishing Lodge, and Janardhana Swamy Temple. Other notable highlights include climb the Sholay rocks at Ramadevara Betta, spot the hanging rope bridge from Sholay's climax, and watch vultures glide over the granite cliffs. It falls within Bengaluru, Bengaluru Urban district, and Karnataka.

Yes, Ramanagara town has several decent South Indian restaurants like Kamat and Udupi-style eateries serving meals, dosas, and filter coffee. Public restrooms are available at the bus stand and near the main temple, but they can be basic; for groups, it’s wise to use clean facilities at restaurants or carry hand sanitiser and tissues.
The ideal time is from October to February, when the weather is cool and dry, perfect for outdoor sightseeing. Pack light cotton clothes, a light jacket for evenings, sturdy non-slip shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water, as the rocky terrain has little shade.
Yes, the town itself is flat and easy to walk around, but the famous rocky hills (like Ramadevara Betta) require steep climbs and are not wheelchair-friendly. For seniors, we recommend hiring a local jeep or staying near the base for scenic views, and carrying a walking stick for uneven paths.
Ramanagara is about 50 kilometers southwest of Bengaluru, roughly a 1.5-hour drive via the NICE Road or Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway. You can hire a cab, take a KSRTC bus from Majestic or Satellite Bus Stand, or board a train from Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna Railway Station to Ramanagara station.
Apart from the iconic Ramadevara Betta (where scenes from the movie Sholay were shot), visit the 12th-century Ramalingeshwara Temple, the serene Janardhana Swamy Temple, and the nearby Revanasiddeshwara Betta. Birdwatchers should not miss the Ramanagara Vulture Sanctuary, home to long-billed vultures, best viewed in early morning.
