Also called Kalavara Betta, Skandagiri rises to roughly 1,450 metres near Chikballapur and carries the ruins of a hill fort associated with Hyder Ali, later dismantled by the British after Tipu Sultan’s defeat. Its reputation today rests on night treks timed to reach the summit before dawn, when, in the cooler months, mist settles thickly in the valley below to create a striking "sea of clouds" effect as the sun rises over the Nandi Hills range in the distance. Skandagiri sits at an elevation of 888 m. The most favourable months to visit are January, November, December, and September, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Skandagiri Trek Base Camp, Skandagiri Fort, and Skandagiri Forest Trail. Other notable highlights include night trek under a star-filled sky, sunrise from the ruined Skandagiri fort, and sea of clouds filling the valley below. It falls within Bengaluru, Bengaluru Urban district, and Karnataka, India.
State: Karnataka
Ideal Duration: Half Day
January, November, December, September
The trek is moderate, with a steep, rocky climb of about 4.5 kilometres one way, so it can be challenging for those with knee or heart issues. Seniors should go with a slower pace, use walking sticks, and take frequent breaks, but it is doable if you are reasonably active.
You should start the trek around 2:00 to 3:00 AM, as the trail is open only at night and the summit sunrise is the main highlight. The entire trek, including descent, takes about 4 to 5 hours, so you'll be back at the base by 8 to 9 AM.
Carry at least 2 litres of water, high-energy snacks like dry fruits or biscuits, a torch or headlamp, and a light rain jacket or windcheater because temperatures can drop to 10-12°C at the summit. Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes, and avoid carrying heavy bags—a small backpack is enough.
There are basic toilet facilities and a few small tea stalls at the base, but there are no shops or restrooms on the trail itself. You should eat a light meal before starting and carry your own snacks and water, as you won't find anything until you return to the base.
Yes, you need a forest department permit, and entry is restricted to a fixed number of trekkers per day. You can book online through the Karnataka Forest Department’s official website or via approved trekking agencies, and you must carry a government ID for verification.
