Once a royal grassland reserved for the Gohil rulers’ blackbuck hunts, Velavadar was declared a national park in 1976 to protect its open tract of black cotton soil grassland, now home to dense herds of blackbuck as well as striped hyena, golden jackal and Indian wolf. Its skies fill each winter with thousands of migratory harriers, including pallid, Montagu’s and marsh harriers, that roost communally in the grass at dusk, making it one of the most significant harrier-roosting sites recorded anywhere. Velavadar National Park sits at an elevation of 8 m and is typically explored in about half day. The most favourable months to visit are January, December, November, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Other notable highlights include blackbuck males sparring on open grasslands at dawn, hundreds of harriers swirling into evening roost, and jeep safari past herds of nilgai and wild boar.
