Declared in 1973-74 among the first batch of Project Tiger reserves nationwide, Melghat’s rugged Satpura hill forest remains less visited than Maharashtra’s Vidarbha lowland reserves like Tadoba, partly due to its more difficult terrain, but continues to support a genetically important tiger population alongside other Satpura wildlife. Melghat Tiger Reserve sits at an elevation of 617 m and is typically explored in about 1-2 days. The most favourable months to visit are January, November, December, and October, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Other notable highlights include early morning tiger pugmark trail at Semadoh, gaur herds grazing near Vairat lake, and sloth bear sighting at dusk near Harisal. It falls within Chikhaldara and Amravati district, India.
State: Maharashtra
Ideal Duration: 1-2 Days
January, November, December, October
Carry plenty of water, light snacks, a hat, sunscreen, and binoculars, as the safari lasts 3-4 hours with no food stalls inside the core zone. There are basic eateries and a forest rest house at the entry points like Paratwada or Harisal, but it's wise to have a packed lunch from your hotel in Chikhaldara.
The reserve is about 30-40 minutes by road from Chikhaldara, and you can hire a private taxi or a shared jeep from the town. The roads are hilly and a bit rough in patches, so opt for a comfortable SUV and take breaks; it is safe if you drive slowly and avoid night travel.
Yes, you must book your safari permit online through the Maharashtra Forest Department website at least 15-30 days in advance, especially for weekend slots. A government-approved guide is mandatory for every safari vehicle, and you cannot enter the core area without one, so just follow their instructions for a safe experience.
The best time is from February to May, when the dry deciduous forests thin out and tigers and other wildlife come to waterholes, making sightings more likely. The reserve remains closed from July to October due to monsoon rains, so plan your trip accordingly.
Safaris are conducted in open 4x4 gypsies, and the terrain is bumpy, so they are not ideal for anyone with severe back or knee problems. However, you can request a softer cushion and ask the driver to go slower; alternatively, you can enjoy birdwatching and nature walks near the entry gates.
