Sim's Park was established in 1874 and named after J.D. Sim, a onetime chairman of the Coonoor municipality who championed its creation. Spread across a natural ravine, the garden's terraced paths pass exotic trees, ferns and flower beds, with an annual fruit and vegetable show held on its grounds. Its cooler microclimate and varied plant collection make it a favourite green escape in Coonoor. Sim's Park sits at an elevation of 1737 m and is typically explored in about 1-2 hours. The most favourable months to visit are April, July, March, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Rose Garden, Central Lawn and Bandstand, and Fossil Tree. Other notable highlights include rare Himalayan blue poppies in bloom, the giant 200-year-old tree ferns near the main lawn, and seasonal tulip and petunia beds on stone terraces. It falls within Nilgiris district and Tamil Nadu, India.
State: Tamil Nadu
Ideal Duration: 1-2 Hours
April, July, March, February
There are no food stalls inside, but you'll find small tea and snack shops just outside the main gate, and a few clean public restrooms near the entrance and mid-park. The park is not fully wheelchair-accessible due to some steps, but the main circular path is manageable with a light wheelchair or walker. Carry your own water bottle as drinking water points are limited.
The best months are from April to June and September to November, when the weather is mild and the annual flower show (usually in May or August) is on display. The monsoon (July-August) brings heavy rain, making paths slippery, while winter (December-February) is cool but can be foggy, reducing views. Early mornings are the most pleasant time of day.
The park is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM, and entry costs around 30 rupees for adults and 10 rupees for children. Senior citizens can often get a small discount, but it's best to carry a valid ID. Avoid visiting on Mondays, as the park is closed for maintenance.
Plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours to comfortably explore the main paths and viewpoints. The park has well-paved, gentle slopes and plenty of benches, making it quite senior-friendly, though some areas have steps. Bring a walking stick if you need extra support, and take breaks at the many shaded seating spots.
Sim's Park is about a 15-minute walk from Coonoor railway station, or a quick 5-minute auto-rickshaw ride (around 50-80 rupees). If driving, there is a small paid parking area near the entrance, but spaces fill up fast on weekends. For a more scenic approach, you can take the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and get off at Coonoor, then walk downhill to the park.
