Raja’s Seat

Landscaped with flowering shrubs, fountains and a small toy train around a pavilion said to have been a favourite retreat of Kodagu’s Haleri-dynasty rajas, Raja’s Seat looks west across a deep valley of forest and coffee land toward layered ridgelines that turn pink and gold at dusk. The site was expanded into a public garden under British administration and remains Madikeri’s best-known vantage point, busiest in the half hour before sunset. Raja’s Seat sits at an elevation of 1160 m. The most favourable months to visit are January, November, December, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Raja’s Seat Main Viewpoint, Gandhi Park, and View of the Cauvery River and Valukai Hill. Other notable highlights include sunset view over Western Ghats from stone pavilion, musical fountain show among seasonal flower beds, and walk through the terraced garden’s manicured hedges. It falls within Coorg and Karnataka, India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there parking and are there facilities like restrooms and food stalls nearby?

Yes, there is a small parking area near the entrance, though it can fill up on weekends. There are clean public restrooms inside the park, and a few local vendors sell snacks, coffee, and corn on the cob just outside the entrance. For a proper meal, you’ll need to drive about 2 km into Madikeri town.

What is the best time of day to visit Raja’s Seat to avoid crowds and see the best views?

Early morning, just after sunrise (around 6:30 to 7:30 AM), is ideal for fewer crowds and clear views of the misty valleys. Sunset is also stunning, but it gets very packed, so arrive at least 45 minutes early if you choose that time.

Is Raja’s Seat accessible for senior citizens or those with mobility issues?

Yes, the main viewpoint area is flat and paved, with benches and a short walk from the entrance. However, there are a few steps leading up to the garden and the main viewpoint, so a companion or walking stick is helpful. Wheelchair access is limited, but the path is generally easy for slow walkers.

Are there any entry fees, and what are the timings?

Yes, there is a nominal entry fee of about ₹10 per person, and the garden is open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily. The ticket counter closes around 7:30 PM, so plan to arrive before that if you want to see the sunset.

How much time should I plan to spend at Raja’s Seat?

Most travellers spend about 45 minutes to 1 hour, which is enough to enjoy the views, walk around the small garden, and take photos. If you want to relax on the benches or watch the sunset, you can easily stretch it to 1.5 hours.
