Akshardham Temple

Inaugurated in 1992 by the BAPS Swaminarayan movement, this Akshardham complex was built entirely in pink sandstone and Italian white marble without structural steel, its central shrine housing a 7-foot gold-leafed murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan flanked by exhibition halls on Indian culture and spirituality. It served as the model for the much larger Akshardham temple later built in Delhi. The complex’s evening Sahaj Anand Water Show combines light, sound and fountains around a mythological narrative, and its manicured gardens make it one of Gandhinagar’s most-visited sites. Akshardham Temple sits at an elevation of 82 m and is typically explored in about 2-3 hours. The most favourable months to visit are January, December, November, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Other notable highlights include pink sandstone and marble main temple facade, gold-leafed central murti of Swaminarayan, and evening musical fountain and light show. It falls within Gujarat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the temple accessible for senior citizens or those with mobility issues?

Yes, the temple is quite senior-friendly, with ramps, elevators, and wheelchairs available on request at the information desk. The main mandir and exhibitions have smooth pathways, but note that the Yagnapurush Kund (stepwell) and garden areas involve some walking and stairs. Plan for a leisurely 3-4 hours, and use the free battery-operated golf carts that run from the parking lot to the main entrance.

What is the best time of day to visit to avoid crowds and heat?

The temple opens at 9:30 AM, and the best time is right at opening, as crowds build up after 11 AM. Since Gandhinagar gets very hot from March to June, prefer visiting between October and February, and aim for the morning slot. The evening aarti (prayer ceremony) at sunset is beautiful but very crowded, so arrive at least 45 minutes early for a good spot.

Are there any dress code restrictions or mandatory items to carry?

There is no strict dress code, but modest, comfortable clothing covering shoulders and knees is recommended, as it is a place of worship. You must remove your shoes before entering the main temple, and shoe storage is free at the designated counters. Avoid carrying large bags, food, or chewing gum, as these are not allowed inside.

How much time should we allocate, and are there any entry fees or guided tours?

Plan for at least 3 to 4 hours to see the main mandir, the two exhibitions (Sahaj Anand Water Show and Hall of Values), and the gardens. The entry fee for the temple and exhibitions is around 150-200 rupees per adult (subject to change), and the water show has a separate ticket. Free guided tours in English and Hindi are available at scheduled times, or you can hire an audio guide for a small fee.

Are mobile phones and cameras allowed inside the Akshardham Temple complex?

No, mobile phones, cameras, and other electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside the main temple and exhibition halls. You can deposit them free of charge in the cloakroom near the main entrance, and collect them after your visit. It is best to carry minimal items to avoid queues at the deposit counter.
