The road down from Jog Falls to Honnavar drops through the Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary’s forested ghats before flattening onto the coastal plain, following roughly the same river from its dramatic upland plunge to its tidal mangrove-lined estuary at the Arabian Sea. Boat rides around Honnavar’s Sharavathi backwaters, including trips to the mangrove-fringed Kanduka and Nachiketa islands, are commonly combined with a Jog Falls visit as a hill-to-coast day itinerary. Honnavar sits at an elevation of 5 m. The most favourable months to visit are January, November, February, and March, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Apsarakonda Falls, Basavaraja Durga Fort, and Honnavar Beach. It falls within Uttara Kannada district and Karnataka, India.

Honnavar is about 85 kilometres from Jog Falls, which takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road through hilly terrain. The easiest option is to hire a private taxi or a tempo traveller from Honnavar, as public buses are infrequent and involve changes at Siddapur. For a group, pre-booking a vehicle with a driver who knows the ghat roads is safer and more comfortable.
You can easily add a visit to the historic Apsarakonda waterfalls and beach, just 12 kilometres from Honnavar, which has a gentle walk and a calm cove. The Sharavathi Backwaters and the Honnavar Mangrove Boardwalk are also gentle, scenic options for a slow afternoon. For a longer stay, the Murudeshwar temple with its giant Shiva statue is about 70 kilometres south, but plan for a separate day to avoid fatigue.
Honnavar has a few decent budget and mid-range hotels and homestays, many with easy access to the Sharavathi River and beaches, but options near Jog Falls itself are limited and more basic. For seniors, staying in Honnavar is more comfortable because it has better medical facilities, restaurants, and smoother roads, and you can do Jog Falls as a day trip. If you want to see the falls at sunrise or sunset, consider a resort near Jog Falls, but book well in advance.
The main viewpoint at Jog Falls offers a stunning view from the top with minimal walking, which is perfect for seniors. However, the steep, slippery stone steps down to the base (around 1,400 steps) are not recommended for those with knee or heart issues, especially after rain. Instead, use the ropeway (when operational) or stick to the upper viewing platforms, and carry a walking stick for uneven paths.
The best time is from July to February, right after the monsoon, when Jog Falls is at its fullest and most spectacular. From July to September, the falls are thundering with brownish water, while from October to February, the water turns clearer and the surrounding greenery is lush. Avoid April to June, as the falls are reduced to a trickle and the heat is intense.
