Bekal Fort

Built in the 17th century and later held by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan before passing to the British, Bekal Fort’s keyhole-shaped watchtower and sea-facing walls have made it one of Kerala’s most recognisable heritage sites and a frequent film location, including scenes from the Bollywood classic "Bombay." Bekal Fort sits at an elevation of 30 m and is typically explored in about 1-2 hours. The most favourable months to visit are January, February, November, and December, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Observation Tower, The Ancient Well, and The Flag Post. Other notable highlights include curving laterite ramparts above the Arabian Sea, observation tower with 360-degree coastal views, and ancient mosque and its carved wooden pillars. It falls within Kasaragod and Kasaragod district, India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we access the beach from the fort, and is it safe for older travellers to climb down?

Yes, there is a narrow staircase from the fort’s western side that leads down to the Bekal beach, but it is steep and can be slippery when wet. It is not recommended for those with knee or balance issues; instead, enjoy the beach from the fort’s elevated walkway. If you want to go to the beach, it’s safer to drive around to the main beach entrance, which has a flat path.

How much time should I plan to spend at Bekal Fort, and is there a lot of walking involved?

Plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the fort grounds, the observation tower, and the seaside views. The fort is spread over a large area with uneven stone steps and grassy slopes, so wear comfortable, non-slip footwear and take breaks as needed. There are shaded spots and benches near the entrance, but no elevators, so it's best to go at a slow pace.

Is there an entry fee, and are there any discounts for senior citizens or groups?

Yes, there is a nominal entry fee of about 25 rupees for Indian adults, and it is free for children under 10. Senior citizens (above 60) get a 50% discount on the ticket, and group bookings of 10 or more can sometimes get a small concession at the ticket counter. Carry a valid ID for the senior discount.

What is the best time of day to visit Bekal Fort to avoid crowds and heat?

Early morning, right after opening at 8 AM, is the best time for cooler weather and fewer visitors, especially between October and February. Late afternoon (after 4 PM) also offers softer light for photos and a pleasant sea breeze, but the fort closes by 5:30 PM. Avoid midday in summer (March to May) as the exposed stone can get very hot.

Are there facilities like restrooms, drinking water, and food stalls inside or near the fort?

There are clean, paid public restrooms near the main entrance, and a few small tea and snack kiosks just outside the fort gate. You will not find any food or water stalls inside the fort, so carry your own water bottle and light snacks. For a proper meal, there are local restaurants about 2-3 km away in Bekal town or near the beach.
