The Vizhinjam lighthouse at the southern end of the beach can be climbed for panoramic views over Kovalam’s coastline, and the promenade below it is lined with the resorts, seafood shacks and Ayurveda centres that have made this stretch the anchor of Kovalam’s tourism since the 1970s. Lighthouse Beach sits at an elevation of 7 m and is typically explored in about 2-3 hours. The most favourable months to visit are July, January, February, and December, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour, Vellayani Lake, and Kovalam Beach. Other notable highlights include climb the red-and-white striped lighthouse for panoramic views, watch fishermen haul traditional catamarans ashore at dusk, and spot dolphins playing offshore during calm morning walks. It falls within Thiruvananthapuram district and Kerala, India.

The beach is about 2 km from Kovalam’s main bus stop and around 16 km from Thiruvananthapuram railway station. You can hire an auto-rickshaw or a prepaid taxi from the station; auto fares are roughly ₹150-200, and taxis cost around ₹500-600 for the one-way trip. For a group, a taxi is more comfortable, but be prepared for narrow, winding roads and some uphill walking near the lighthouse entrance.
Carry sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, drinking water, and a light towel, as there is no shaded boardwalk along the main beach stretch. There are several small shacks and restaurants just behind the beach serving fresh coconut water, seafood, and South Indian meals, with some offering rooftop seating. For rest, the lighthouse garden has a few benches, and many hotels nearby allow non-guests to use their café for a break if you buy a drink.
The sea at Lighthouse Beach can have strong currents and sudden deep drops, especially during monsoon months (June to September), so swimming is only advised in the marked safe zones. Lifeguards are present during daylight hours, but always check the flag system and avoid venturing far from shore. For seniors or less confident swimmers, it’s safer to wade or just enjoy the waves from the sand.
The beach itself is sandy and flat, but there are no dedicated ramps or wheelchair paths, so walking on loose sand can be tiring. There are a few shaded benches near the lighthouse base and some cafes with basic seating, but public washrooms are limited and not always clean. It’s best to bring a portable stool or walking stick, and plan for short, slow strolls rather than long treks.
Early morning (6 to 8 AM) is ideal for a peaceful walk, soft light, and cooler temperatures, with fewer tourists. Late afternoon (4 to 6 PM) is also good for sunset views, but it gets busier with families and vendors. Avoid midday (11 AM to 3 PM) as the sun is harsh and the sand becomes too hot for comfortable walking.
