The most favourable months to visit are January, December, February, and March, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the entry fees and timings, and do we need to book tickets online?

The sanctuary is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with a small entry fee (around Rs 30 for Indians and Rs 100 for foreign nationals). You can buy tickets at the counter, but online booking is recommended on weekends and during migratory season to avoid queues. Boat rides have separate charges (around Rs 150–300 per person) and are best booked at the jetty on arrival.

What should we carry, and are there any restrictions on food or cameras?

Carry binoculars, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and plenty of drinking water, as there are no shops inside the sanctuary. You are allowed to bring light snacks, but please avoid feeding the birds and dispose of all waste properly. Cameras and phones are permitted, but drones and loud speakers are strictly banned to avoid disturbing wildlife.

How long should we plan to spend at the sanctuary, and is a guide necessary?

Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours walking the main trails, plus another 45 minutes if you take a boat ride. A guide is not mandatory, but hiring one (available at the entrance) greatly enhances your experience as they know the best spots for rare birds and can identify calls. For groups, it’s wise to book a guide in advance during peak season (November to February).

What is the best time of day to visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary for bird watching?

Early morning, between 6:30 AM and 9:00 AM, is ideal as birds are most active and the weather is cooler. Late afternoon, around 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM, is also good for spotting migratory birds returning to roost. Avoid midday heat as most birds rest then.

Is the sanctuary accessible for senior citizens or those with limited mobility?

The sanctuary has a mix of paved paths, wooden walkways, and uneven dirt trails, so some areas are easy, but others can be challenging. There are no wheelchairs available on site, but you can hire a local boat for a canal cruise to see birds from the water with minimal walking. We recommend wearing sturdy, non-slip footwear and taking frequent rests on the benches provided.
