Set up on land once cultivated by the Baker family in the 19th century, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary’s mangroves and reed beds host migratory waterfowl each winter alongside resident egrets, herons, darters and kingfishers, with walking trails and a watchtower giving views over the lake. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary sits at an elevation of 8 m and is typically explored in about 2-3 hours. The most favourable months to visit are January, December, February, and March, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Kingfisher Watchtower, Coconut Grove Walkway, and Canoe Ride Jetty. Other notable highlights include spot Siberian cranes during winter migration months, guided canoe rides through narrow mangrove channels, and watch egrets and herons at dawn from watchtower. It falls within Kottayam district and Kerala, India.
State: Kerala
Ideal Duration: 2-3 Hours
January, December, February, March
The sanctuary is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with a small entry fee (around Rs 30 for Indians and Rs 100 for foreign nationals). You can buy tickets at the counter, but online booking is recommended on weekends and during migratory season to avoid queues. Boat rides have separate charges (around Rs 150–300 per person) and are best booked at the jetty on arrival.
Carry binoculars, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and plenty of drinking water, as there are no shops inside the sanctuary. You are allowed to bring light snacks, but please avoid feeding the birds and dispose of all waste properly. Cameras and phones are permitted, but drones and loud speakers are strictly banned to avoid disturbing wildlife.
Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours walking the main trails, plus another 45 minutes if you take a boat ride. A guide is not mandatory, but hiring one (available at the entrance) greatly enhances your experience as they know the best spots for rare birds and can identify calls. For groups, it’s wise to book a guide in advance during peak season (November to February).
Early morning, between 6:30 AM and 9:00 AM, is ideal as birds are most active and the weather is cooler. Late afternoon, around 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM, is also good for spotting migratory birds returning to roost. Avoid midday heat as most birds rest then.
The sanctuary has a mix of paved paths, wooden walkways, and uneven dirt trails, so some areas are easy, but others can be challenging. There are no wheelchairs available on site, but you can hire a local boat for a canal cruise to see birds from the water with minimal walking. We recommend wearing sturdy, non-slip footwear and taking frequent rests on the benches provided.
