Once the private shikargah (hunting reserve) of the Scindia maharajas, Madhav National Park centres on the Sakhya Sagar and Madhav Sagar lakes and retains a former royal hunting lodge on its grounds, making it a popular day trip that combines wildlife viewing with a slice of Gwalior’s royal history. Madhav National Park sits at an elevation of 368 m. The most favourable months to visit are December, November, January, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Mahadeo Hill, Sakhya Sagar Lake, and Garh Kund. Other notable highlights include sailing past basking marsh crocodiles on Sakhya Sagar, morning chital herds near Madhav Mahal ruins, and sunset boat ride on George Castle viewpoint. It falls within Shivpuri Tahsil district and Madhya Pradesh.
State: Madhya Pradesh
Ideal Duration: Full Day
December, November, January, February
The nearest airport is Gwalior (about 120 km away), which has regular flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and Indore; the nearest railway station is Shivpuri (about 15 km away), which is well-connected to Gwalior and Jhansi. From Shivpuri, you can take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to the park gate, and from Gwalior, a direct taxi takes about 3 hours.
The park is home to leopards, chital, sambar, nilgai, chinkara, and a variety of birds, including the rare white-rumped vulture. Tigers were reintroduced here in 2023, but sightings are rare and not guaranteed; your best bet is an early morning safari with a knowledgeable guide.
The Madhav National Park offers forest rest houses and eco-tourism cottages inside the park, while the nearby town of Shivpuri has budget and mid-range hotels. For senior travellers, the park’s safari vehicles are accessible (though bumpy), and the rest houses have basic amenities; it’s best to book a ground-floor room and request a slow, gentle safari to avoid discomfort.
The ideal time is from November to March, when the weather is cool and dry, and animals gather near water sources, making them easier to spot. Avoid the monsoon months (July to September) as the park remains closed, and the summer heat from April to June is intense, though it is the best time for tigers near waterholes.
Safaris must be booked online through the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department’s official website (MP Eco Tourism), with options for jeep or cantor (shared gypsy) safaris. Entry fees are around 300–400 rupees for Indians and 1,000–1,500 rupees for foreigners, plus vehicle charges; safari timings are typically 6–10 AM and 3–6 PM, with two shifts per day.
