Named for the single tree that once stood alone on its summit, One Tree Hill offers open views over the western edge of Matheran’s plateau and is a shorter, easier walk than some of the town’s farther points, making it a common choice for a quick evening outing before dinner. One Tree Hill sits at an elevation of 725 m and is typically explored in about 1 hour. The most favourable months to visit are January, November, December, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Other notable highlights include solitary tree silhouette against the orange sky, panoramic view of Charlotte Lake below, and horse ride up the gentle slope. It falls within Raigad district and Maharashtra, India.

No, there are no permanent facilities at the summit itself, so carry your own water (at least 1 litre per person) and light snacks. There are basic public toilets and small eateries at the Matheran market area, which is where you start the trek. Plan to have a full meal before you go, and carry a packed lunch if you intend to stay for a while.
It is not recommended, as the path becomes slippery with mud and moss, and there is a risk of leeches and sudden fog reducing visibility. If you do go, wear non-slip shoes, carry a raincoat, and check the weather forecast. The views are dramatic with waterfalls, but only experienced trekkers should attempt it during heavy rain; seniors are advised to visit in winter (November to February) instead.
You cannot take a motorised rickshaw all the way, as Matheran is a vehicle-free zone, but you can hire a horse or a hand-pulled rickshaw up to a certain point near the base of the hill. From there, you still need to walk about 15-20 minutes on a steep, uneven path to reach the top. We suggest booking a horse for the return trip if you feel tired, as the descent can be hard on the knees.
Early morning (around 6 to 8 AM) is ideal, as the air is clear and you get a stunning sunrise over the Sahyadri ranges. Late afternoon (4 to 6 PM) is also good for golden hour views, but the trail can be busier. Avoid midday in summer, as the sun is harsh and the climb can be tiring.
The trek is moderate, involving a steady uphill climb of about 2-3 hours from Matheran's main market, with some rocky patches. For senior travellers, we recommend taking frequent breaks, carrying a walking stick, and starting early in the morning to avoid the afternoon heat. It is doable but requires reasonable fitness, so consider hiring a local guide or a pony for part of the way if needed.
