Emerald Lake

Set in the small settlement of Emerald on the Ooty-Avalanche road, this lake sits amid a patchwork of tea estates, eucalyptus groves and forest-covered slopes. It draws far fewer visitors than Ooty Lake, making it a peaceful stop for those wanting quiet countryside scenery. The surrounding villages and estate roads also make for pleasant short drives and walks through the Nilgiri tea country. Emerald Lake sits at an elevation of 2267 m and is typically explored in about 1-2 hours. The most favourable months to visit are April, March, July, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Lakeside Picnic Point, Boathouse at Emerald Lake, and Emerald Lake Nature Trail. Other notable highlights include walk the quiet lakeside path through tea bushes, spot Nilgiri langurs and Malabar whistling thrushes, and picnic under tall eucalyptus near the water edge. It falls within Nilgiris district and Tamil Nadu, India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Emerald Lake easily accessible for senior citizens or those with mobility issues?

Yes, the lake is located just off the main Ooty–Coonoor road, about 5 km from Ooty town, and you can drive right up to the entry point. From there, it is a short, flat walk of about 200 metres to the lake viewpoint, so it is manageable with a slow pace or a walking stick. Wheelchairs are not available, but the path is mostly even and well-maintained.

What should we carry for a comfortable visit, especially in the colder months?

Carry a light woollen jacket or shawl even in summer, as the breeze near the lake can be chilly, and in winter (November to February) temperatures can drop to 5–8°C. Wear sturdy, non-slip walking shoes as the path can be damp and slightly slippery near the water’s edge. Also bring a small foldable stool or a rain poncho in case you want to sit and enjoy the view, as benches are limited and sudden drizzles are common.

Is there any entry fee or parking charge, and are there restrooms nearby?

There is a nominal entry fee of about 10–20 rupees per person, and parking for cars is free but limited, so arriving early helps. Clean, basic public restrooms are available near the ticket counter, but they are not always spotless, so carry your own tissues and hand sanitiser. There are no ATMs or shops inside, so bring cash and water.

What is the best time of day to visit Emerald Lake for clear views and good lighting?

Early morning, between 8 am and 10 am, is ideal as the mist lifts and the water is calm, giving you the classic mirror-like reflection of the surrounding pines and hills. Late afternoon (around 4 pm to 5 pm) is also good, but mornings are less crowded and cooler. Avoid midday when the sun is harsh and the light is flat.

Are there any boating facilities at Emerald Lake, and is it safe for older travellers?

Yes, you can enjoy a pedal boat or a rowboat, but the lake is small and the rides are gentle, lasting about 20–30 minutes. Life jackets are provided, and the boatmen are helpful, but we recommend only boarding if you are comfortable with stepping into a boat and sitting for a while. For those who prefer to stay dry, the walking path around the lake is equally rewarding.
