Though geographically in Tamil Nadu, Padmanabhapuram Palace remains administered by Kerala under a historical agreement, its rosewood-carved ceilings, murals and secret passages preserved much as they were when Travancore’s rulers governed from here before shifting their capital to Thiruvananthapuram. Padmanabhapuram sits at an elevation of 53 m and is typically explored in about half day. The most favourable months to visit are December, January, September, and July, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Ramaswamy Temple, Padmanabhapuram Fort, and Ulagalantha Perumal Temple. Other notable highlights include 300-year-old black granite dance hall with polished floor, secret underground passage to Udayagiri Fort, and rosewood and teak carvings in the King’s bedchamber. It falls within Kanyakumari and Kanyakumari district, India.

There are a few small local eateries and tea stalls within walking distance of the palace, offering simple South Indian meals and snacks. For a more comfortable sit-down meal, you can drive 10 minutes to Thuckalay town, which has several decent restaurants. The palace itself has clean restrooms and a shaded garden area where you can rest before or after your tour.
There is no strict dress code, but modest clothing is recommended as it is a heritage site. You must remove your shoes before entering the main palace areas, and socks are allowed if you prefer. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the palace, so leave your camera or phone in the locker provided at the entrance.
A typical visit takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, as you walk through multiple courtyards, halls, and the wooden palace complex. The palace has many steep wooden staircases and uneven floors, so it may be challenging for those with mobility issues. However, the ground-level areas are accessible, and staff can guide you to the most senior-friendly route.
From Nagercoil (about 45 km away), you can take a local bus or hire a taxi, which takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. From Thiruvananthapuram (about 55 km), the drive is similar, and you can also take a direct bus to Thuckalay, which is just 2 km from the palace. For a group of seniors, booking a private cab is the most comfortable option, as it allows for flexible stops.
The palace is open all days of the week except Mondays, and also remains closed on government holidays. Visiting hours are from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM. It’s best to arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds and the midday heat.
