Barda Wildlife Sanctuary

Spread across the low, forested Barda hills, the sanctuary was developed from the 1970s as a potential second habitat for the Asiatic lions of Gir, part of long-running efforts to reduce the risk of the entire wild population being concentrated in one reserve, though the lion population there today remains small. Its dry deciduous forest instead supports a healthy population of leopards along with jackals, hyenas and a range of Saurashtra scrub-forest birdlife, making it a quieter wildlife alternative to Gir itself. The most favourable months to visit are January, November, December, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Other notable highlights include leopard sighting on early-morning jeep safari, jogida Dam’s still waters for birdwatching, and ancient Barda temple ruins atop forested hill. It falls within Porbandar, Porbandar district, and Gujarat, India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any walking trails or gentle nature paths suitable for older travellers or those with limited mobility?

Yes, there is a short, flat nature trail near the interpretation centre that is easy to walk, but the main safari routes are bumpy and require a 4x4 vehicle. The sanctuary authorities offer a slow, guided jeep tour that stops at scenic viewpoints, which is more comfortable for seniors. Wheelchair access is limited, so it's best to call ahead to arrange a modified route or use a walking stick.

What wildlife can we realistically expect to see, and are there any special birdwatching opportunities?

You have a good chance of spotting leopards, wild boars, hyenas, and Indian foxes, but sightings are not guaranteed, especially in dense forest. The sanctuary is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 200 species including the endangered white-rumped vulture and crested serpent eagle. Early morning visits increase your chances, and a good pair of binoculars is essential.

Is the sanctuary easily accessible from Porbandar town, and what is the road condition like?

Barda is about 20-25 kilometres from Porbandar, and the drive takes roughly 45 minutes by car or taxi. The road is mostly paved but has some rough patches near the forest entry, so a sturdy vehicle like an SUV or a hired taxi is recommended. You can also hire a local guide at the forest gate, which is mandatory for entry.

Are there any restroom facilities, drinking water points, and food options inside or near the sanctuary?

Basic restrooms and a small drinking water tap are available at the forest gate and near the interpretation centre, but there are no facilities inside the safari zone. There is no restaurant, so you must carry your own water and light snacks, though local dhabas are found on the Porbandar road. It is wise to use the restroom at the entry point before starting your safari, as the journey can take 2-3 hours.

What is the best time of year to visit Barda Wildlife Sanctuary for comfortable weather and good wildlife sightings?

The ideal time is from November to February, when the weather is cool and dry, making daytime walks and jeep safaris pleasant. Monsoon (July-September) is lush but trails become slippery, and summer (April-June) is extremely hot, though animals gather near waterholes. For senior travellers, winter mornings and evenings are safest.
