Raigad Ropeway

Opened in the early 1990s, the Raigad ropeway carries visitors from the base village up to near the fort’s Maha Darwaja (main gate) in around a five-minute ride, offering sweeping views of the surrounding Sahyadri ridgeline and making the fort accessible to visitors who would otherwise be unable to manage the traditional stepped trek. Raigad Ropeway sits at an elevation of 473 m and is typically explored in about 15-20 minutes. The most favourable months to visit are November, January, December, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Other notable highlights include aerial views of the 1,400 stone steps below, the fort’s iconic golden throne (Singhasan) after a quick ride, and glimpses of the Morni and Takmak cliffs from the cable car. It falls within Maharashtra, India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any restrictions on carrying bags, food, or water on the ropeway?

Small backpacks, water bottles, and light snacks are allowed, but large suitcases or trolleys are not permitted. You can carry a small bag of food for a picnic at the top, but make sure you bring back all waste, as there are limited dustbins at the fort.

Is the ropeway suitable for elderly or less mobile travellers?

Yes, the ropeway is quite senior-friendly as you remain seated throughout the ride, and both base and top stations have ramps and railings. However, the top station leads to steps for exploring the fort, so you may want to plan a slow pace or skip the steepest sections.

How long is the ropeway ride and how often do the cable cars run?

The ropeway covers about 1.2 kilometres and takes roughly 10 to 12 minutes one way. Cable cars depart every few minutes, especially during peak season, so you rarely wait more than 10 to 15 minutes at the base station.

What happens if the ropeway stops due to weather or power failure during the ride?

The ropeway has a backup generator and trained staff who restart it quickly, usually within 15 to 20 minutes. In rare cases of high winds or lightning, the ride may be temporarily suspended for safety, and passengers are kept informed via announcements at both stations.

What is the best time of day to take the ropeway to avoid long queues?

Early morning, right after the ropeway opens at 9:00 AM, is the quietest time, especially on weekdays. Avoid midday between 11 AM and 2 PM on weekends and holidays, as that is when tour groups and school trips arrive.
