Mookaneri Lake lies in the hills near Yercaud, surrounded by the coffee and citrus plantations that characterise the Shevaroy range. It draws far fewer visitors than the main Yercaud lake, making it a good choice for travellers seeking a calmer, more rural setting within the same hill station. Mookaneri Lake sits at an elevation of 388 m and is typically explored in about 1 hour. The most favourable months to visit are January, December, November, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Lake Bund Walkway, Mookaneri Lake Main Viewing Deck, and Small Temple of Goddess Mookambika. Other notable highlights include sunrise over still waters with plantation mist, spotting kingfishers and egrets along the shore, and walking the quiet path through coffee and orange groves. It falls within Salem, Salem district, and Tamil Nadu, India.
State: Tamil Nadu
Ideal Duration: 1 Hour

Basic benches are placed along the walking path, and a few shaded rest areas exist near the main entrance. There are no public restrooms or drinking water taps on site, so plan to use facilities at nearby restaurants or hotels before arriving. Carry your own water bottle and a small foldable stool if you need extra seating comfort.
There is no entry fee to visit the lake, and it is open to the public from sunrise to sunset. However, the walking path and viewing platforms are best used during daylight hours for safety and to see the birds. Local authorities sometimes restrict access during heavy rains or nesting seasons, so check with Salem’s tourism office before your visit.
The lake is about 8–10 km from Salem Junction, and you can hire an auto or taxi for a 20–30 minute ride. For group travellers, a small bus or van can park near the main gate, but the internal walking paths are narrow, so plan to walk in a single file. It is best to coordinate with a local driver who knows the route, as some approach roads are narrow.
Carry binoculars, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a light raincoat if visiting between October and December. The walking path is mostly flat but can be slippery near the water edge after rain, so wear non-slip shoes. Avoid venturing off the marked path, and keep an eye on the ground for snakes, especially in the grassy areas during the monsoon.
Early morning, between 6:30 AM and 9:00 AM, is ideal because the birds are most active and the light is soft for photography. Late afternoon, around 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM, is also good as migratory birds return to roost. Avoid midday heat, especially from March to June.
