Gira Falls drops in a wide sheet over a rocky escarpment just off the road between Waghai and Ahwa, a short detour on the approach to Saputara. It runs at full force during and shortly after the monsoon, drawing crowds of day-trippers to the viewing platform and surrounding forest, though the flow thins considerably by the dry winter and summer months. The best time to visit is October to March. Other notable highlights include monsoon curtain of water at full force, easy walkway to the falls viewpoint, and mist-cooled breeze near the cascade. It falls within Dang district and Gujarat, India.
State: Gujarat
Ideal Duration: 30-60 Minutes
The drive is about 45 to 60 minutes on a winding, hilly road that is well-maintained but narrow in patches. A standard sedan or SUV is fine, but a larger coach may struggle on the last stretch, so it's better to use two smaller vehicles. Drive slowly, especially during monsoon season when the road can be slippery.
The best time is from July to February, right after the monsoon, when the falls are at their fullest. By late winter, the water reduces to a trickle, so aim for August to November for the most dramatic view. Avoid summer months, as the falls may be completely dry.
There is a paved walkway and a series of steps leading to a viewing platform, but the descent and climb back can be steep, roughly 200 steps. If you have mobility issues, you can still enjoy the falls from the upper viewpoint near the parking area, which requires no walking. Take your time and rest on the benches provided along the path.
Swimming is not allowed at the main falls due to strong currents and slippery rocks, and there are no lifeguards. You can wade near the shallow edges at the base, but it is not recommended for older travellers due to the risk of falls. Enjoy the view and photography from the safe viewing platforms instead.
There are a few small tea stalls and snack vendors near the parking area, but no proper restaurant or clean public toilets. It is wise to use the washrooms at your hotel in Saputara before leaving and carry your own water and light snacks. For a proper meal, plan to return to Saputara town, which has several good eateries.
