Locally nicknamed Tsunami Island after briefly changing shape following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, this sandbank appears and disappears with the tide between the mainland and Sindhudurg Fort, and boat operators typically add a short stop here to combined fort and dolphin-watching trips out of Malvan. Tsunami Island sits at an elevation of 9 m and is typically explored in about 1 hour. The most favourable months to visit are January, November, December, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Other notable highlights include walk the exposed sandbar at low tide, view Sindhudurg Fort’s seaward walls from sand, and wade through knee-deep warm Arabian water. The island is a flat sandbar with no steps or steep paths, so walking is easy, but you must be comfortable wading through knee-deep water from the boat to the shore. The sand is soft and can be tiring for long walks, so carry a walking stick if needed. Avoid visiting during rough monsoon seas, and always stay close to the boat crew for guidance.
There are no permanent facilities on the island—no restrooms, no shops, and no natural shade, so carry your own water, snacks, and an umbrella or hat. The boat operator usually provides a small canopy or you can sit near the boat for some shade. Plan to use restrooms at Tarkarli beach before boarding.
Early morning (around 8-10 AM) is ideal as the tide is favourable, the sun is not harsh, and the island is less crowded. Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours exploring, taking photos, and relaxing on the sandbar. Afternoon visits can be very hot, and the island partially submerges during high tide, so check tide timings before you go.
You board a shared or private motorboat from Tarkarli jetty, and the ride takes about 20-30 minutes depending on tide and weather. The boat drops you near the sandbar, and you wade through shallow water to reach the island. It is best to go during high tide for a smoother ride and easier access.
Carry waterproof bags for your phone and camera, wear sandals or water shoes that can get wet, and bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a light towel. The boat ride can be bumpy, so hold on tight and avoid standing up. Also, be mindful of jellyfish or sharp shells in the shallow water—wear footwear and don’t wander too far from the group.
