Commissioned by the Chola emperor Rajaraja I and completed in the early 11th century, this temple is one of the "Great Living Chola Temples" recognized by UNESCO. Its central vimana tower rises to roughly 66 meters and is topped by a single massive granite capstone, while the complex also preserves remarkable Chola-era frescoes and bronze sculptures despite the region lacking a nearby granite quarry. Brihadeeswarar Temple sits at an elevation of 64 m and is typically explored in about 2-3 hours. The most favourable months to visit are January, December, February, and March, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Inscriptions and Frescoes on the Inner Walls, Kalyana Mandapam, and Brihadeeswarar Temple Main Shrine. Other notable highlights include the 63-metre granite vimana shadow-free at noon, pair of giant Chola-era stone doorkeepers at entrance, and huge monolithic Nandi bull facing the sanctum. It falls within Thanjavur, Thanjavur district, and Tamil Nadu, India.

Photography is allowed in the outer courtyard and near the monolithic Nandi bull, but using a flash is prohibited inside the main sanctum and the inner corridors. Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed, and you must purchase a camera ticket at the entrance before taking any pictures.
There is no strict dress code, but modest attire covering shoulders and knees is recommended out of respect. Entry is free for all visitors, though a small fee applies for camera use (still and video). Senior citizens do not need to pay extra, and there are no separate group charges.
Early morning (right at 6:00 AM) or late afternoon (after 4:30 PM) are the quietest times, as large tour groups usually arrive between 10 AM and 2 PM. Official Tamil Nadu tourism guides are available at the entrance, and you can hire one for about 300–500 rupees for a 45-minute tour, which is highly recommended to understand the temple's history and architecture.
The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM. There are no weekly closed days, but during special festivals or maintenance, timings may change, so it is best to check locally the day before your visit.
The main temple complex involves walking about 300–400 metres from the parking area, and you must climb about 20–30 broad, low steps to reach the sanctum. There are no ramps or lifts, but the courtyard is flat and shaded, so taking frequent rests is easy. Wheelchair users may need assistance, and it is advisable to visit during cooler morning hours.
