Less visited than Vagamon’s meadows or pine forest, Murugan Hill’s small shrine and surrounding rocky outcrop give a quieter vantage point over the tea and cardamom-growing valley below. Murugan Hill is typically explored in about 1 hour. The best time to visit is October to March. Nearby points of interest include Murugan Hill Butterfly Garden, Murugan Hill Sunset Point, and Murugan Hill Tea Gardens. Other notable highlights include panoramic view of Vagamon’s rolling green hills, short, gentle climb of about 100 steps, and idyllic view of the Meenachil river valley below. It falls within Idukki district and Kerala, India.
State: Kerala
Ideal Duration: 1 Hour
There is a nominal entry fee of around 10-20 rupees per person for the temple area at the top. As it is a sacred site, dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), and remove your footwear before entering the temple premises.
The climb involves about 1,200 well-laid stone steps, which can take 45 minutes to an hour at a relaxed pace. It is moderately strenuous, so seniors should carry a walking stick, take frequent rests on the benches provided, and go early in the morning to avoid heat.
The ideal time is between October and March, when the weather is pleasant and dry, making the uphill walk comfortable. Avoid the monsoon months (June to September) as the paths can get slippery and leeches are common.
There are a few small tea and snack stalls at the base and near the halfway point, but no full restrooms beyond basic ones at the entrance. Carry your own water bottle and some light snacks, as options are limited and close by late afternoon.
The summit features a small Murugan temple, a peaceful meditation hall, and panoramic views of the surrounding paddy fields, backwaters, and the distant Western Ghats. Plan to spend at least 30-45 minutes at the top to enjoy the breeze, take photos, and rest before descending.
