Punganoor Lake is the social centre of the Yelagiri hill station, a compact man-made lake ringed by walking paths and gardens. Visitors can take pedal boats out onto the water while enjoying views of the surrounding Javadi Hills, making it a popular first stop for families and a relaxed spot to watch the sunset. Punganoor Lake sits at an elevation of 1018 m and is typically explored in about 1-2 hours. The most favourable months to visit are January, February, November, and December, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Nearby points of interest include Punganoor Lake Main Viewpoint, Lakeside Sacred Fig Grove & Meditation Circle, and Old British-era Regulator Bridge. Other notable highlights include pedal boats drifting past reflections of Yelagiri hills, sunset walk along the lake’s paved promenade, and spotting migratory birds near the lake’s marshy edge. It falls within Tirupattur district and Tamil Nadu, India.

Yes, there is a nominal entry fee of around 10–20 rupees per person, and pedal boats are available for rent, typically costing 100–150 rupees for 20–30 minutes. Senior travellers should note that the boating area has steps, so comfortable, non-slip footwear is advised.
Basic public restrooms are available near the entrance, and a few small snack stalls sell tea, coffee, and packaged snacks. There are shaded benches under trees along the lake’s edge, but for a proper meal, it’s best to carry your own picnic or visit a restaurant back in Yelagiri town, about 6 km away.
The lake is safe during light rains, but the surrounding paths can become slippery with mud and moss, so caution is needed. Heavy downpours may cause the lake to overflow slightly, and authorities sometimes restrict access to the boating area—check local weather and ask your hotel before heading out.
The lake is located just off the main Yelagiri–Punganoor road, with a short, flat walk from the parking area to the viewing platform. However, the boating jetty has a few steep steps, and the walking path around the lake is partly uneven, so a walking stick or companion is recommended.
Early morning, between 6:30 and 8:30 AM, is ideal, as the mist lifts off the hills and the lake is calm, with fewer tourists. Late afternoons are also pleasant, but avoid midday heat, especially between March and May, when temperatures rise.
